Mary Kaun-English is a sculptor who utilises saggar firing in ritualistic, geometric sculptures. I love this alternative use of saggar firing- too often is it only used with vessel forms. I think the firing technique shows off very well on these forms, as each is individual and varied, which makes beautiful meditative objects as well as deterring functional use – which breaks down saggar objects. I can imagine these being desirable interior design elements, though I am interested in stretching the boundaries of what has been done with saggar firing, although I am also partially to blame.
